completed in 1736, is one of the last caravanserai that were built in the world, it represents one of the finest examples of the Ottoman architecture in Syria. The khan stands right on one of the most ancient and famous biblical streets, The Straight Street (aka “Souk Midhat Pasha) that is built by the Romans, witnessed Paul the Apostle, and mark the passage of the Silk Road’s caravans.
Centuries ago, world’s caravans while on the move along the Silk Road were confident that by every night-fall of their journey they will find a khan to lodge in. Khans were strategically positioned within a day’s journey of each other. According to historians and researchers, this urban plan gave birth to the world’s first globalized overland network. Where travelers, traders, merchants, nomads, from every nation gather to trade their goods and by night to exchange stories, customs, ideas, and dreams.
Khans were purposely designed to host and encourage social interactions between its lodgers. Accommodation rooms were lined around a central courtyard that fosters all communal activities. So is the case in Khan Sulayman Pasha, with its rectangular central courtyard surrounded by two levels of rooms overlooking the courtyard.
khans were designed with simplicity, however not humbly, as the focus was not on extravagant decoration and ornaments rather on the proficiency/intelligence. architectural creativity and structural Khan Sulayman Pasha, has two of the biggest domes in Old Damascus, with a diameter of 11 meters and 6 meters height each. Each khan resembled its time’s structural and architectural techniques, hence a masterpiece.
As we at Wahoud Group believe in the historical value and cultural significance of this UNESCO registered landmark, Khan Sulayman Pasha, we have proudly undertaken the responsibility of renovating it and more importantly rehabilitating the former role of the khan as a commercial, social, and cultural center.
With the help of a great team of architects, structural engineers, designers, and skilled craftsmen our aim was to renovate the khan in the most scientific way, using raw-earth traditional local materials in modern techniques.
